SATURDAY, JUNE 4 (SUNDOWN) – JUNE 6, 2022
Shavu’ot will begin at sundown on June 4, 2022. We will celebrate as a congregation on Sunday morning, June 4th.
SHAVU’OT שָׁבוּעוֹת (Pentecost): Literally “weeks” or known as Feast of Weeks. According to tradition, in the third month of the Biblical calendar, exactly 7 weeks after the Passover and Exodus from Egypt, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—the Holy One of Israel—bound Himself in covenant with His people at Mt. Sinai amid lightning, thunder, fire, billowing smoke and a shofar blast. From then on they would be a nation who would manifest His glory and bring redemption to the world.
On Shavuot in Jerusalem after Jesus’ ascension, that covenant and the manifestation of His glory was made personal with the giving of the promised Holy Spirit:
“Suddenly there came a sound from the sky like the roar of a violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then they saw what looked like tongues of fire, which separated and came to rest on each one of them. They were all filled with the Ruach HaKodesh and began to talk in different languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.” Acts 2:2-4
After this, not only was Israel the chosen vessel for the manifestation of God’s glory and redemption on a national level, but the church, by the Holy Spirit, became the manifestation of God’s glory on an individual level. Now the church and Israel were inextricably linked—symbolized by the two loaves the priests would bring as an offering before the Lord—to manifest God’s glory to the nations but also to the individual.
